Solar in the United Kingdom

UK solar research for rooftop PV, batteries, planning, export payments, product support and installer decisions.

Modern home with rooftop solar panels

The UK now spans conventional rooftop PV and a new plug-in solar category

For conventional systems, Smart Export Guarantee tariffs remain supplier-specific, while roof ownership, planning/building context, installer standards and the property’s own load determine the economics. From August 2026, households also gained a new small-system option.

Plug-in solar became legal in Great Britain on 27 August 2026

The UK government announced that plug-in solar panels became legal to buy and use across Great Britain from 27 August 2026. The announcement describes kits producing up to 800W and estimated savings of up to £110 per year under its assumptions. That does not make every balcony, rental or electrical setup automatically suitable, so product instructions and property-specific constraints still matter.

Use the real export tariff in payback calculations

SEG suppliers choose their own rates and terms. A useful calculation separates electricity used directly in the home, electricity stored for later and electricity exported to the grid.
