Wattage is only the starting point
A solar module can be labelled 100 W, 200 W or 500 W and still be a poor electrical match for a particular controller or inverter. Four datasheet values explain much of that fit: open-circuit voltage (Voc), maximum-power voltage (Vmp), short-circuit current (Isc) and maximum-power current (Imp). They should be read together rather than treated as isolated specifications.
Voc sets the voltage ceiling
Voc is measured with the module electrically open and is normally higher than the operating voltage. It matters because an inverter or charge controller has a maximum DC input voltage that must not be exceeded. Module voltage can rise in cold weather, so designers do not simply multiply the printed Voc by the number of panels and stop there. They apply the manufacturer temperature coefficient and the site’s expected minimum temperature. Melnti’s cold-weather string-voltage guide explains that check in more detail.
Vmp is where the module is intended to operate
Vmp is the voltage near the module’s maximum-power point under the stated test conditions. A string’s operating voltage needs to sit inside the inverter or controller’s MPPT window often enough for reliable energy harvest. If the string is too short, it can fall below the tracking range during hot conditions; if it is too long, cold-weather Voc can become the limiting risk.
Isc and Imp describe current limits
Imp is the current at maximum power, while Isc is the higher short-circuit test value used when checking conductor, fuse and equipment input ratings. Parallel strings add current. Modern high-current modules can therefore be electrically incompatible with an older MPPT even when the voltage looks acceptable. Use the exact model datasheet
Do not substitute numbers from a visually similar panel or another wattage in the same family. Manufacturers can change cell count, current, voltage, connector or dimensions between variants.
