Nameplate Voc is measured at standard conditions
A module’s open-circuit voltage on the datasheet is normally stated at standard test conditions, including a 25°C cell temperature. In colder conditions the module voltage usually rises. Multiplying the nameplate Voc by the number of modules without a cold-temperature correction can therefore underestimate the highest voltage the inverter may see.
Use the exact module coefficient
Find the module’s voltage temperature coefficient in the manufacturer datasheet and confirm whether it is expressed as percent per degree Celsius or volts per degree. Use a design minimum temperature appropriate to the site and the applicable electrical standard. Compare the corrected string Voc with the inverter ceiling
Calculate the corrected cold-condition Voc for one module, multiply by the modules in series, then verify the result stays below the inverter’s absolute maximum DC input voltage with any required design margin. This check is separate from ensuring the operating voltage remains inside the MPPT window. Both limits matter; review the MPPT voltage/current guide for the operating-range side.
Do not overlook replacement modules
If a failed module is replaced with a different model or electrical revision, recalculate the string. A replacement with similar wattage can still have meaningfully different Voc, current and temperature coefficients. Mixed electrical characteristics may also affect bypass-diode behaviour and operating current.
Document the inputs, not just the answer
A useful design record includes exact module model, datasheet revision, module count per string, design minimum temperature, coefficient used, corrected string Voc, inverter model and maximum input voltage. That lets another engineer reproduce the calculation later rather than trusting an unexplained spreadsheet result.
Cold Voc is one part of string design
Also check hot-condition MPPT voltage, maximum input current, short-circuit current allowances, connector compatibility, conductor voltage rating and applicable rapid-shutdown or isolation requirements. String design should be treated as a complete electrical envelope.
