Backup operation can change the electrical system state
A solar-battery system that islands from the utility during an outage must still operate within the equipment manufacturer’s design and the local electrical rules. Neutral switching, earthing and bonding requirements vary with inverter topology, backup gateway, supply arrangement and jurisdiction. This is not an area for an owner to copy a wiring diagram from another installation. The useful homeowner question is whether the qualified installer has documented how the exact system behaves in both grid-connected and islanded modes.
Ask for commissioning evidence, not verbal reassurance
The handover pack should identify the inverter, gateway or transfer equipment, applicable installation standard, protection devices and the tests performed after commissioning. Changes to the property can invalidate old assumptions
Generator additions, switchboard replacement, new EV charging, an inverter replacement or expansion from essential-loads backup to whole-home backup can alter the design. If equipment changes, ask the electrician to re-confirm protection and islanding behaviour instead of assuming the previous commissioning record remains valid. Owners should not remove covers or test live conductors to investigate these issues.
A good record reduces future troubleshooting risk
Keep the single-line diagram, test results, equipment settings, firmware versions and photographs of labelled switchgear with the system documents. If a backup system behaves unexpectedly—such as nuisance tripping or failure to energize selected circuits—give those records to a qualified service technician rather than experimenting with neutral or earth connections.
