The names describe architecture, not a universal feature set

A hybrid inverter typically combines PV MPPT inputs and battery conversion within one platform, while a dedicated battery inverter focuses on bidirectional battery-to-AC conversion and may be used in an AC-coupled system. Manufacturers use these labels differently, so compare the exact model interfaces, backup functions and supported batteries rather than relying on the category name.

Hybrid systems can simplify a new solar-plus-storage design

For a new installation, one coordinated hybrid platform may reduce the number of power-conversion devices and allow direct DC charging from the PV array. It can also centralise monitoring and export control. The design still needs correct PV string voltage/current, battery voltage, charging limits and backup ratings. Dedicated battery inverters can suit retrofits

An existing PV system may be easier to retain when a compatible AC-coupled battery inverter is added rather than replacing the original solar inverter. Backup power is model-specific in both architectures

Neither “hybrid” nor “battery inverter” guarantees whole-home backup. Check grid-forming capability, transfer equipment, continuous and surge power, phase support, neutral/grounding requirements and whether solar can continue operating during an outage. Some systems require separate gateways or backup boxes.

Battery compatibility can be tightly controlled

High-voltage and low-voltage batteries are not interchangeable. Manufacturers may approve only specific battery families and firmware combinations. Choose based on the project lifecycle

A new build, an inverter replacement and a battery retrofit have different priorities. Consider future expansion, service access, expected replacement timing, local support and whether a single-vendor ecosystem is an advantage or a constraint. A good architecture is one that remains electrically valid and supportable throughout the intended life of the project.
