SMA Home Storage Compatibility Checklist

A source-led checklist for pairing SMA Home Storage modules with current SMA hybrid inverters without assuming every module count or firmware combination works.

Start with the inverter family

SMA currently documents Home Storage with Sunny Boy Smart Energy and Sunny Tripower Smart Energy. Do not treat older Sunny Boy Storage products as interchangeable. Confirm the exact inverter model and current firmware before choosing the battery stack.

Module count changes with the inverter

Each Home Storage module provides 3.28 kWh usable energy. SMA states that Sunny Boy Smart Energy supports one to four modules, while Sunny Tripower Smart Energy supports two to five. That makes the supported system capacity a configuration question, not simply a battery-name question.

Check firmware and commissioning

Manufacturer compatibility guidance includes minimum firmware requirements for the hybrid inverter family. Record the installed firmware, communication wiring and commissioning status before treating a pairing as proven. See the broader battery/inverter firmware compatibility guide.

Backup is a system feature

A battery that can store energy does not by itself prove whole-home backup. Backup behavior depends on inverter, grid-isolation hardware, wiring and local rules. Use the home battery backup readiness checklist before promising outage operation.
