Large-Format Bifacial Module Handling and String-Current Checklist

A field-oriented checklist for large, heavy, high-current bifacial modules such as modern 650–720W utility and C&I panels.

Residential rooftop solar panels

Start with size and weight

Large-format modules can exceed two metres in length and weigh around 30kg or more. Confirm the number of people or lifting equipment required by the manufacturer and verify roof access before the panels arrive on site.

Check racking and clamp zones

Do not scale a residential racking assumption up to a utility-size panel. Use the module installation manual for approved clamp zones, rail orientation, maximum spans and front/rear static-load ratings.

High current changes inverter selection

Modern bifacial modules can exceed 16A operating current and approach or exceed 18A short-circuit current. Compare module Imp and Isc with the inverter or optimizer input-current limits, including manufacturer-required safety factors and parallel-string rules.

Voc still determines series length

High-current modules can have relatively modest voltage, but maximum string length is still governed by cold-weather open-circuit voltage. Calculate the site-adjusted Voc against the inverter’s absolute maximum DC voltage.

Bifacial gain is a design input, not guaranteed energy

Rear-side production depends on albedo, row spacing, mounting height, shading and rear obstructions. Avoid treating the datasheet bifaciality factor as a guaranteed site yield.

Connectors and cable routing matter

Use manufacturer-approved connector combinations, conductor sizes and bend radii. Heavy modules can place unexpected strain on poorly supported leads during installation.

Document the exact module revision
