“Solar generator” usually means battery + inverter + charging electronics
Most consumer products marketed as solar generators are portable power stations. They store energy in an internal battery, provide AC and DC outputs through an inverter and can often recharge from wall power, a vehicle or compatible solar panels.
What the label can hide
- Wh versus W: watt-hours describe stored energy; watts describe output power.
- AC output: check continuous output, not only a short-duration surge number.
- Solar input: voltage and current limits determine which panels can be connected.
- Recharge time: a large battery with a small solar input may take a long time to recover off-grid.
- Cycle life: compare the test conditions and stated end-of-life capacity.
- UPS behavior: transfer time and supported modes vary by product.
Best-fit use cases
Portable power stations are strongest where portability and simplicity matter: keeping communications online, powering electronics during short outages, supporting camping or mobile work, or providing apartment-friendly backup where permanent electrical work is not possible.
When to look at a fixed system instead
If the goal includes high-power loads, automatic whole-home transfer, large rooftop arrays, multi-day autonomy or permanent integration with the building’s electrical system, a fixed battery/inverter installation is usually the more appropriate category.
