They solve backup in different ways
A generator turns fuel into electricity when it is running. A battery stores electricity generated earlier by solar or the grid. Solar-plus-storage therefore shifts energy through time, while a generator can continue producing as long as fuel, maintenance and operating conditions allow.

The best answer can be hybrid
For long outages or highly variable weather, some sites use solar and batteries for normal daily energy and a generator as an occasional fallback. The economic value depends on fuel cost, outage duration, solar resource, battery cost and the loads that truly need continuous power.
