Operational capacity continued to rise
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported on 7 August 2026 that utility-scale battery storage ended 2025 at 43.6 GW of operating nameplate capacity. Operators then added 8.3 GW during the first six months of 2026, taking the total to nearly 52 GW. EIA describes an average annual growth rate of 70% over the previous three years.
Planned additions are not the same as operating plants
EIA also reports operator plans for another 54 GW over the following two and a half years, including 14 GW planned for the second half of 2026.
