U.S. utility-scale battery storage reached nearly 52 GW by mid-2026

The U.S. Energy Information Administration says operational battery-storage capacity reached nearly 52 GW after 8.3 GW was added in the first half of 2026.

Capacity continued to climb quickly

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that operational utility-scale battery storage stood at 43.6 GW at the end of 2025. Operators added 8.3 GW during the first six months of 2026, bringing nameplate battery-storage capacity to nearly 52 GW.

The near-term project pipeline is also large

EIA says operators reported plans for another 14 GW in the second half of 2026 and 54 GW over the following two and a half years. Planned projects are not the same as commissioned capacity, so Melnti keeps those figures separate.

Why Melnti tracks this

Grid-scale storage does not determine which home battery a consumer should buy, but rapid deployment can influence interconnection practice, market familiarity and the broader storage supply chain. Household decisions still require exact equipment compatibility, local tariffs, backup goals and a qualified installer.
