India approves 5 GW floating-solar programme paired with at least 10 GWh of storage

India approved the PM Surya Sarovar Yojana for 5,000 MW of floating solar paired with energy storage providing at least two hours, equivalent to at least 10,000 MWh.

Cabinet approval combines floating PV with storage

India’s Press Information Bureau announced on 31 July 2026 that the Union Cabinet approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana with a ₹5,070 crore outlay. The scheme targets 5,000 MW of floating solar photovoltaic projects with co-located energy storage providing a minimum two-hour duration, or at least 10,000 MWh at the target solar capacity.

It broadens the storage market beyond rooftop systems

The programme is utility-scale infrastructure, not a residential subsidy. Its relevance to Melnti is in market development: large storage procurement can influence supply chains, engineering capability and the wider Indian storage ecosystem.

Separate project scale in user guidance

Melnti should use this update as policy context while keeping residential and commercial battery buying advice focused on the technical requirements of those smaller systems.
