European system operators reviewed tight summer conditions
On 11 August 2026 the European Commission reported on an ad-hoc Electricity Coordination Group meeting held during heatwaves and drought. The group found no short-term adequacy risk at that point, although conditions were expected to remain tight and some generation was constrained by low water levels or high water temperatures.
Solar helped at midday; storage matters later
The Commission highlighted significant solar generation that eased pressure on central-hour electricity prices, while stressing the role of storage in moving excess daytime generation into evening consumption peaks. Cross-border electricity flows and demand-side measures were also part of the resilience picture.
Do not convert wholesale-system context into a battery payback promise
A household battery’s economics depend on local tariffs, export compensation, usable capacity, efficiency and cycling strategy. The EU-level event is useful evidence for why flexibility matters at high renewable penetration, but it does not establish that every residential battery will save money.
