EU electricity system remains stable during August heat while storage stays critical

The European Commission says Europe’s electricity system remained stable during August heat and drought, with high solar easing midday prices while storage remained critical for evening peaks.

The Electricity Coordination Group found no short-term adequacy risk

On 11 August 2026 the European Commission reported that the Electricity Coordination Group had reviewed electricity security during heatwaves and drought affecting parts of Europe. The group confirmed no short-term adequacy risks at that meeting, while saying conditions were expected to remain tight in the following week.

Weather reduced some generation while cross-border coordination helped

The Commission says low water levels or high water temperatures reduced electricity generation in some EU countries. Cross-border coordination and the single electricity market helped electricity flow to areas where it was needed. This is system-level context rather than a claim that every national or local grid experienced the same conditions.

High solar helped central-hour prices, but evening shifting remains important

The Commission specifically highlighted significant solar generation as helping ease pressure on electricity prices during central hours of the day. It also said storage deployment remains critical so excess generation during peak solar hours can be used during evening consumption peaks.
