Whole-home does not mean unlimited power

A whole-home backup gateway can isolate the main service and keep many circuits available, but the battery and inverter still have continuous and surge limits. Large HVAC, water heating, pumps, ovens and EV charging can exceed those limits unless the system sheds or manages loads.

Critical-loads panels make priorities explicit

A dedicated backup subpanel moves selected circuits—such as refrigeration, lighting, communications, medical needs or a well pump—onto the backed-up side. This can reduce required inverter power and battery capacity, but adds panel work and means non-selected circuits remain off during an outage.

Automatic load management creates a middle ground

Some ecosystems can control large loads dynamically instead of permanently moving them out of backup. That can preserve more of the whole-home experience while preventing simultaneous loads from overwhelming the inverter. Confirm which loads can actually be controlled and what happens if communications fail.

Installation complexity varies by service equipment

Meter-main layout, service rating, neutral/ground arrangement, generator interlocks and local code can make one architecture significantly easier than the other. A simple diagram in a brochure cannot determine site feasibility. The electrician needs the actual service equipment and load calculation.

Decide which loads are allowed to surprise you

Whole-home backup sounds simpler because fewer circuits are deliberately excluded, but it makes load control and surge behavior more important. List large motors, electric heating, EV charging, cooking and water-heating loads, then decide which can be automatically shed or manually avoided during an outage. A critical-loads panel requires more upfront circuit selection, while whole-home designs often require more careful controls and customer discipline.
