Grid connection and backup output are separate questions
A house can have a three-phase utility connection while a battery system backs up only one phase or a selected essential-load panel. Conversely, some hybrid systems can create a three-phase island. The correct comparison begins with the required loads and the manufacturer-supported topology rather than the number of conductors entering the property.
Single-phase backup can be simpler
Backing up selected single-phase circuits can reduce inverter size and avoid trying to support large three-phase loads during an outage. Refrigeration, lighting, communications and some socket circuits may fit comfortably. The limitation is that loads placed on other phases will be unavailable unless they are moved or separately supplied.
Three-phase backup supports more complex loads
A genuine three-phase backup system can maintain three-phase motors or distribute household circuits across all phases, but it usually requires compatible inverters, switching and protection. It also needs enough battery power to support combined demand. Three phases do not multiply battery energy; a 10 kWh battery still stores roughly the same usable energy regardless of how many phases receive it.
Surge and phase imbalance remain critical
Backup systems can trip even when total kW appears adequate if one phase sees a large motor start or if the inverter has a per-phase current cap. Check the exact peak-power duration and phase imbalance specification. Where the manufacturer limits unbalanced output, circuit allocation may matter as much as the headline total power.
Test the intended island
The final commissioning test should deliberately simulate a grid outage under representative loads. Confirm transfer time, phase voltages, neutral/earthing behaviour, protected circuits and restart. A successful grid-connected solar test does not prove the battery will support the same loads during an islanded outage.
