DOE profiles 198kW solar plus 1.3MWh battery resilience project in North Dakota

DOE’s Office of Indian Energy says a United Tribes Technical College resilience project combines a 198kW rooftop solar array, 1.3MWh battery system and microgrid controls.

The project combines solar, storage and microgrid control

On 6 August 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Indian Energy profiled a United Tribes Technical College project in Bismarck, North Dakota. DOE says the planned integrated system includes a 198kW rooftop solar array, a 1.3MWh battery energy storage system and a microgrid controller alongside an existing 250kW diesel generator.

Resilience is the design objective

DOE says the project is intended to support autonomous operation of the Lewis Goodhouse Wellness Center for up to three days so the building can continue serving as an emergency shelter.

The lesson is system integration

This is not a consumer-product recommendation. The useful signal is that resilience projects are increasingly designed around coordinated generation, storage, controls and existing backup generation. Equipment pages should therefore avoid presenting battery capacity alone as a complete resilience solution.
