New challenge targets storage beyond 100 hours
The UK government announced the Ultra-Long Duration Energy Storage Challenge on 20 August 2026. The programme offers £28 million for technologies capable of storing clean energy for more than 100 hours, including advanced batteries and underground hydrogen storage.
It is a system-level storage signal
The programme is not a home-battery rebate and should not be presented as one. Its relevance to Melnti is broader: it shows continued policy attention to how a high-renewables electricity system handles long periods when generation and demand do not align.
Keep technology scales separate
Residential lithium batteries, commercial behind-the-meter storage and ultra-long-duration grid storage solve different problems. Melnti should link this update to storage explainers without implying that a household battery is directly comparable with a 100-hour grid-scale project.
