Solar Inverter Reactive Power, Power Factor and Grid Support

A practical explanation of reactive power and power-factor settings in modern solar inverters and why grid-support requirements can reduce available real power.

Real and reactive power serve different purposes

Real power, measured in watts, performs useful work and represents the energy normally associated with solar production. Reactive power, measured in vars, supports voltage and electromagnetic fields in AC systems. An inverter with a fixed apparent-power limit cannot always deliver its maximum real power while simultaneously supplying a large amount of reactive power.

Grid codes can require automatic behavior

Utilities may require inverters to operate at a specified power factor or use voltage-reactive-power curves, frequency response or other grid-support functions. These settings are market- and connection-specific and should be commissioned using the approved grid profile rather than copied from another project. Changing them without authorization can breach interconnection requirements.

Power-factor settings can affect clipping and equipment sizing

If an inverter must maintain reactive-power headroom, the relationship between DC array size, real AC output and inverter apparent-power rating becomes important. A system designed only around unity power factor may encounter additional limiting under a grid-support requirement. Commercial projects should model this explicitly rather than assuming the nameplate kilowatt rating is always available for real power.

Document the connection agreement

Record required power factor, volt-var or watt-var settings, export limits, utility profile and the firmware version used during commissioning. If performance later appears lower than expected, these records help distinguish legitimate grid-support operation from thermal derating or equipment faults. The settings are part of the electrical design, not merely an app preference.

Performance reports should preserve context

When investigating clipping or unexpectedly low real-power output, record grid voltage and the active grid-support mode at the same time as inverter power. Without that context, legitimate reactive-power operation can be mistaken for a hardware fault or an undersized inverter.
