A central inverter aggregates a large amount of DC generation into one or a small number of conversion units. A string-inverter design distributes conversion across multiple smaller inverters closer to array blocks. The electrical design, site scale and available products determine which architecture is practical; a simple residential rule cannot be scaled up without considering collection systems, transformers and protection.

Redundancy and service exposure differ

A central unit can simplify the number of major conversion assets but creates a larger single point of lost production during a failure.
