Solar Export Limiting: Meter and CT Accuracy

Learn why export limiting depends on correct site metering, CT direction, phase mapping and control response rather than only an inverter setting.

Export control starts with a trustworthy measurement

An export-limited system needs to know the power flowing at the grid connection. Depending on the equipment, that measurement may come from a dedicated energy meter, current transformers or utility-compatible metering hardware. If the measurement is reversed, assigned to the wrong phase or scaled incorrectly, the control system can make the wrong decision even when the inverter itself is healthy.

Three-phase sites require especially clear phase mapping

On a multi-phase connection, the controller may regulate the sum of phases or apply other market-specific rules. A CT installed on the wrong conductor or a phase sequence mismatch can produce confusing values. This is not a reason for an owner to move sensors inside a switchboard. Record the monitoring screen, meter model, CT ratio and commissioning diagram, then ask a qualified installer to verify the physical mapping against the manufacturer instructions and local connection agreement.

Control response has finite speed and tolerances

An export controller measures, calculates and commands inverter power; that loop is not mathematically instantaneous. Utilities and manufacturers may therefore define response behavior and acceptable tolerances. Do not promise a perfectly flat zero-watt trace from a consumer monitoring graph unless the relevant connection standard actually requires that. The important question is whether the commissioned system meets the applicable export limit under the approved control method.

Keep export evidence with the system handover

Save the configured export limit, meter/CT identifiers, phase mapping and the result of the commissioning test. If a battery or EV charger is added later, re-check the measurement architecture because new controllable loads can interact with the same site meter.
