“Expandable” does not always mean “add any module years later”
Modular battery systems are attractive because capacity can grow, but manufacturers set specific rules for expansion. A new module may have a different state of health, firmware revision or cell balance from modules that have already completed hundreds of cycles. Some platforms support later expansion within a defined age or state-of-charge procedure; others require matched modules or service tools. Confirm the current manual for the exact battery generation before buying additional capacity.
Check the complete supported configuration
Record the existing battery model and serial/revision information, number of modules, inverter model, BMS/controller model and firmware. Verify the maximum module count and whether parallel towers or additional controllers are allowed. The BMS communication checklist is relevant because a physically compatible module can still be unsupported by the current controller or inverter firmware.
State of charge and state of health both matter
Manufacturers may require modules to be brought to a defined SOC before connection or may specify an installer-led balancing process. That is not a DIY step: high-energy battery systems can remain hazardous even when the user interface appears off. Ask a qualified installer to follow the manufacturer expansion procedure and retain any commissioning logs.
Recalculate power and warranty assumptions
Adding kWh does not guarantee proportional continuous or peak power. Bus current, BMS limits and inverter output can remain unchanged. Also check whether mixing module ages affects warranty treatment or usable-energy guarantees. Use usable energy and degradation to understand why old and new modules can behave differently. A good expansion quote should state what capacity changes, what power changes, what stays limited and how the expanded bank will be supported.
