Define black start for the exact system
Black start means restoring an energised backup bus when no normal grid reference is available, but manufacturers implement it differently. Some battery inverters can restart from remaining reserve energy; some require a minimum battery state of charge; some can use PV under specific conditions. Do not assume every system advertised as backup-capable can recover from a fully depleted battery without the grid.
Check the isolation device
Before an inverter can energise household circuits during a utility outage, the approved transfer switch or gateway must isolate the property from the public network. Commissioning should verify the switching device, neutral/earthing arrangement and protected circuits. Backfeeding an external grid is a serious safety hazard, so islanding protection is not an optional convenience feature.
Understand low-state-of-charge shutdown
Battery management systems protect cells from excessive discharge. Once the system reaches its shutdown threshold, backup can stop even though the interface previously displayed a small reserve. Document the restart threshold and whether PV can wake the system the next morning. Weather, snow or shade may prevent enough PV voltage from being available at sunrise.
Stage large loads after restart
An island that has just restarted should not necessarily energise every high-surge appliance simultaneously. Pumps, compressors and EV chargers can exceed the inverter’s short-term capability. Use load shedding or a staged restart where supported. Essential circuits should be prioritised before optional loads so a single motor start does not repeatedly collapse the backup bus.
Test a realistic outage sequence
A useful acceptance test covers grid loss, transfer, several representative backup loads, solar charging while islanded if supported, low-SOC behaviour and grid return. Record the results and owner instructions. A five-second demonstration with a nearly full battery proves far less than a documented test of the system states that matter during a long outage.
