Match electrical operating current
Modules in series share the same string current, so a lower-current module can constrain higher-current neighbours. Compare maximum-power current and short-circuit current from exact datasheets. Similar wattage does not guarantee similar current because a higher-voltage, lower-current module can have the same power rating as a lower-voltage, higher-current model.
Recalculate string voltage across temperature
Open-circuit voltage rises in cold conditions while operating voltage falls as modules become hot. Use the manufacturer temperature coefficients and local design temperatures to verify the expanded string remains below the inverter’s maximum DC voltage and inside the MPPT operating window. Do not use only standard-test-condition voltage.
Keep orientation and shading coherent
Putting modules with very different irradiance profiles in the same series string can create recurring mismatch. Separate roof faces or heavily shaded additions may deserve another MPPT or module-level electronics. Compare the inverter’s number of trackers and allowed strings per tracker before deciding the layout.
Do not improvise connector mating
Connectors that look mechanically similar are not automatically approved to mate. Mixed connector brands can create resistance, water ingress or certification problems. Follow the module and inverter installation instructions and use manufacturer-approved connectors and crimp tooling. Existing field connectors should be inspected before extending an older array.
Record the revised design
Update the single-line diagram, string map, DC labels and monitoring documentation after expansion. If original modules are no longer available, note exactly why the substitute is electrically acceptable. This helps future technicians distinguish a deliberate mixed-module design from a later unrecorded repair.
