Define the purpose of the reserve
A backup reserve is energy intentionally kept available for an outage. It reduces the energy available for daily self-consumption or tariff shifting. Choose it from critical-load energy needs, likely outage duration, solar recharge opportunity and the owner’s risk tolerance. A fixed percentage copied from another home is not a design calculation.
Check the meaning of displayed state of charge
Manufacturers may protect additional energy above or below the user-visible range. A display showing 0% does not necessarily mean cell voltage is truly zero, and a user reserve setting may operate inside the manufacturer’s protected usable window. Use the product manual when translating a percentage reserve into usable backup kWh.
Coordinate grid charging and tariff control
Some systems allow scheduled grid charging, storm modes or utility-controlled programs. These features can override normal self-consumption behaviour. Confirm whether the owner has enrolled in any demand-response program and what settings the installer can change. An unexplained overnight grid charge can otherwise be mistaken for a fault.
Test outage behaviour
Commissioning should demonstrate which circuits remain energised, how quickly transfer occurs and whether high-starting-current loads are permitted. Also test recovery when the grid returns. If the system supports black start from solar after deep discharge, verify the conditions required; not every battery/inverter pair can restart a dead backup bus automatically.
Record the final configuration
Include reserve percentage, operating mode, grid-charging schedule, critical-load panel details and any utility-control settings in the handover pack. Take screenshots or export configuration files where supported. That record makes future troubleshooting safer and helps prevent a software update or owner setting change from silently altering the intended backup strategy.
