What was announced

The UK government launched the Ultra-Long Duration Energy Storage Challenge on 20 August 2026. The programme offers £28 million to support storage technologies designed for durations above 100 hours, including advanced batteries and underground hydrogen storage.

This is different from a home battery

Residential batteries are generally designed to shift solar energy across hours, support evening loads and provide outage backup. Ultra-long-duration storage addresses a grid-scale problem: moving much larger amounts of energy across multi-day periods when renewable output and demand do not line up.
