Solar in New York City

NYC solar projects involve city permitting, structural review and licensed electrical work in addition to equipment selection.

New York City solar has building-specific requirements

New York City requires permits for building-connected solar systems. The Department of Buildings says solar PV work can involve construction and electrical permits, and building owners may need a Registered Design Professional to address structural requirements. Electrical work must be performed by appropriately licensed professionals.

What to prepare before requesting quotes

  • Recent electricity use rather than only the monthly bill amount.
  • Roof type, usable roof area and known shading.
  • Whether the building is a house, co-op, condo or commercial property.
  • Backup goals if a battery is being considered.
  • Any known electrical-service or roof work already planned.

Installer checks matter

NYSERDA says participating NY-Sun contractors are vetted, and some earn additional Quality Solar Installer designations. Melnti keeps its own directory status separate from these external credentials and records the source of any credential claim.
