Wattage is a module output rating
A larger module can deliver more watts even when its efficiency is similar to a smaller panel. If two products have different physical dimensions, comparing nameplate watts alone does not tell you which one uses roof area more effectively.
Efficiency relates output to module area
Efficiency is useful when roof area is scarce because it helps describe how much rated output fits into a given panel surface. But actual roof utilisation also depends on module dimensions, orientation, row spacing, setbacks, obstructions and whether the installer can create a clean layout.
Power density can make the comparison easier
When datasheets provide dimensions, watts per square metre or an equivalent power-density measure can help compare differently sized modules. Even then, the practical metric is the total compliant array that fits the roof, not a theoretical rectangle filled edge-to-edge.
System limits can erase a paper advantage
Inverter MPPT voltage/current limits, string length, optimizer or microinverter compatibility, export limits and structural loading can constrain the array. A module choice that adds a few theoretical watts but creates an awkward string or leaves unusable roof strips may not improve the final system.
Ask for a layout, not just a panel brochure
A serious quote should show panel count, exact module model, placement, key setbacks, expected annual production assumptions and the inverter pairing. Compare the installed design and not only a salesperson’s headline module efficiency.

Keep assumptions visible
Ask the designer to state the module dimensions and count used in the proposal so a later substitution cannot silently change the roof layout or rated array size.
