PM Surya Ghar passes 50 lakh rooftop-solar households in India

India reported more than 50 lakh PM Surya Ghar beneficiary households in August 2026 and 14.8GW of rooftop capacity under the programme, highlighting the scale of the residential market.

Large rooftop solar installation

What changed

India’s Press Information Bureau reported on 4 August 2026 that PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana had crossed 50.06 lakh beneficiary households. A later August government update reported 51.58 lakh households, around ₹28,024 crore in subsidy transferred and 14.8GW of rooftop-solar capacity commissioned under the programme.

Why the milestone matters

The scale shows that residential rooftop solar in India is no longer a small pilot market. It also means installers, equipment brands, distribution companies and support processes have to serve a very large and geographically varied customer base.

A national programme still has local execution

Subsidy eligibility, application status, inspection, meter/grid steps and practical installation involve the relevant local DISCOM and current programme process. Buyers should use official portals and should not assume that a generic salesperson’s subsidy claim applies unchanged to every address.

Equipment quality still matters after the subsidy

A subsidised system can still underperform if the design ignores roof layout, module/inverter compatibility, electrical protection, monitoring or service support. Where backup is required, the battery and inverter must also be sized for actual loads and surge requirements.

How Melnti uses the milestone

The programme makes India an important ongoing research market rather than an occasional location page. Melnti will connect India-specific policy updates to verified equipment, system-sizing tools and future city/DISCOM research. Start with the India guide and verified equipment library.
